Blackjack is the king of casino table games. It is a gaming product whose house edge can get lowered to 0.5% with an optimal strategy, which is why many gamblers find it appealing. Well, that and its decision-making angle give individuals a far more sizeable illusion of control than what other casino options supply.
Those deep into this game know that over the past few years, many hard-core Vegas gamblers have commented that Sin City’s twenty-one entertainment is no longer what it once was. Such claims are based on many Vegas venues switching to 6:5 payouts instead of the traditional 3:2 ones, table minimums going up, and the continuous shuffling of machines’ widespread implementation lowering advantage play. Hence, many old-school players have disliked these and other modern changes, as they have been less favorable for skilled players.
But things are not as bleak as many make them out to be. John Mehaffey, the man who played at ninety-three casinos in a day and the Editor-in-Chief at OnlineUnitedStatesCasinos.org, recently published an article that was featured in Casino Player Magazine and Casino Center, on what he believes are the best blackjack games in America’s number one gaming hub while also listing ones to avoid. Here, we provide a quick summary of his findings.
Best Las Vegas Blackjack Games
According to Mehaffey, the most enticing twenty-one tables in Nevada’s most populous city are at Fontainebleau Las Vegas, MGM Resorts, Treasure Island, and the Palms.
These are famed establishments that all house 3/2 double-deck games that stand on soft seventeens, which, in Mehaffey’s opinion, are the best thing that Vegas can offer right now. Treasure Island Hotel and Casino, located at 3300 South Las Vegas Boulevard, has a $50 table like this, while the Park MGM, the Palms, and Mandalay Bay have $100. The Fontainebleau resort, which opened its doors in December 2023 on 2777 South Las Vegas Boulevard, has the same table, along with the Bellagio, Aria, and MGM Grand, a group of venues that offer this game at $300 or more.
A prime alternative to these, not counting live dealer blackjack options, are six-deck games with standard double-down rules, surrender, the ability to split aces up to four times, and dealers who stand on soft seventeen. Those are on hand at M Resort, Treasure Island, and the Fontainebleau, where they get offered a $50 minimum. Many other gaming locales offer them, such as the Cosmopolitan, Durango, Palace Station, Red Rock, the Strat, and a few others, but the minimum in their games is $100.
As far as the best $5 and $3 tables go, Jerry’s Nugget 3/2 double-deck blackjack is the first to get this flattering honor. The second game to get such praise is in Poker Palace, which runs $3 3/2 blackjack, the only one of its kind in Vegas, which permits players to double down on two or three cards before and after splitting.
Worst Las Vegas Blackjack Games
John believes that the Golden Nugget, one of the Battle Born State’s most renowned and historically significant casinos, operating since 1946, is the home of two of the worst blackjack games in Vegas and likely in all of Nevada. Those are the Lucky Cat tables, which are $5, where if the dealer gets a total of twenty-two, four dice get rolled to determine the outcome. Otherwise, everyone gets standard rules here but gets burdened in this 8.95% house edge game with a $2 Bonus Spin side bet, which is mandatory. Hence, the cited considerable casino advantage.
The other Golden Nugget game no one should play is the 6:5 $5 and $10 tables at this venue, which also demand the same $2 side bet mentioned above. Know that the $10 table is the most active, with the $5 one becoming available only when the Lucky Cat pit gets shut down.
Fremont Casino is another Vegas property with a Bonus Spin side bet, which is $1 extra. Binion’s and Four Queens have a version, a 3/2 one with a $10 minimum.
Are Online Games Better Than Vegas’ Best?
The streaming dealer choices featured at premium real-money gambling sites like DuckyLuck, Bovada, BetUS, and Café Casino have minimum wager limits of only a dollar. They accept bets up to $500 per hand, with this cap going up to $5,000 at Café Casino.
Regarding their rules, they have conditions similar to Vegas’ most gambler-friendly tables. That said, many hard-core online game-of-chance fanatics prefer to play software variants, like Betsoft’s Super 7 Blackjack game, whose house edge can go down to as low as 0.44%, where the computer dealer must stand on seventeen and draw to sixteen in this title that pays three to two, and where insurance pays two to one. On top of all this, playing against software moves things along at a much faster clip compared to when a dealer is in control of the action.
