Blackjack vs Poker: Which has the Better Odds?

By Polly Ernest.

There is no denying that poker and blackjack are two of the most iconic casino games and have top billing as favorite gambling card games in any establishment. People enjoy playing in land-based venues, online, and at home.  In fact, while many people gamble for real money, there are plenty who are happy just to play for chips, tokens, or even matchsticks. These games are quite different from each other, and the odds can vary quite a bit.

Casino Chips and Playing Cards

If you are playing for anything other than fun, it is essential to understand the rules and etiquette of each so that you can get the maximum enjoyment. Some online sites have dummy and trial games so that you can perfect your skills. If you are playing live dealer versions of the games, you will be gambling against real competition, so you need to know what you are doing. It is often worth practicing at home with physical cards or playing computer-simulated versions if you are a newcomer to get the hang of things. Even if you are a long-time player, it can still be worth polishing up your skills every now and then.

Before looking at the odds, let’s look at the games. Blackjack is a fast-paced card game where you play against the dealer, with the ultimate aim being to beat the dealer. Blackjack offers simple fun and is easy to learn. Essentially, you are playing against the house. Bear in mind that the house ‘always wins’, so while it is fun to play, ultimately, the chances are that the casino is going to win more than you do.1)EDITOR NOTE: The odds in blackjack are pretty straight forward.  A classic blackjack game has typically less than a 1% casino advantage if the player follows blackjack basic strategy.

When playing, you can ‘hit’ or ‘twist’ to ask for more cards, ‘stand’ or ‘stick’ to keep the cards you have, ‘double down’ to double your bet and get an additional card, or ‘split’ pairs into two separate hands. Blackjack is ultimately a game of chance with strategy and skill applied. For the quick-thinking who enjoy a strategic twist, blackjack can be a perfect game.  It has the advantage that you are only playing against one opponent, the dealer; however, most poker players claim there is a higher element of skill in ‘their game’.2)EDITOR NOTE: From personal experience, I can attest that poker is a much more difficult game than blackjack.  Even if you stick to one version of the game, poker is complex and requires different skills to master.  For more information on this subject be sure to read Yancy Howard’s series about blackjack versus poker.

There are many versions of poker, and you can choose from the perennial favorite Texas Hold ’em, Omaha, or Seven-card Stud. Rather than just playing against the dealer, players compete against each other at the table. Poker is not just about the cards dealt but what you do with them. Players must outsmart and outplay their opponents using bluff, skill, and strategy while deploying the good old ‘poker face‘.

Playing poker

Poker is one of the few forms of gambling where the term ‘professional’ is used, and these players take their tournaments incredibly seriously. That is hardly surprising when you consider the enormous amounts of money that top players can earn. However, even though poker can seem daunting and has many rules, if you master them, the odds of winning can be outstanding, even if you play poker as a hobby. Sites like Replay Poker allow hobby poker players to try out and hone their talent.

While many might dream of getting an invitation to an exclusive, private members club like the one in Molly’s Game, the reality is a live-dealer online version is probably more than enough excitement for most people. To be fair, just playing against a video simulation can be pretty intense! One of the best things is that poker is such a versatile game, and different games have different rules and challenges. So, most people can find a game that suits them.

For example, in Texas Hold ’em, each player receives two private cards, shares five’ community cards, ‘ and has to make the best hand. Omaha is similar, but the player gets four private cards. Seven-Card Stud has no community cards, and players work with what they are dealt to form the best hand.

Both games rely heavily on skill and strategy, and simple decisions can influence the outcome. In poker, players have to understand the ranking of different poker hands and recognize the value of the cards they hold compared to what others at the table may (or may not) hold. While in blackjack, there’s also a huge amount of strategy and mathematics, and even the possibility to count cards.

However, poker has more of a psychological aspect, which makes it very different from a lot of other card or casino games.

Luck and chance are significant in both poker and blackjack, as players in both games do not have any control over the cards they get, only what they decide to do with those cards and when to call it a day. You can improve your odds in blackjack using strategies like card counting. In poker, you can calculate probabilities, read the competition, and bluff effectively. By perfecting these, a good poker player can create winning chances even with poor cards.

Let’s just say that understanding poker betting odds is complicated. If you want fast-thinking, strategic play, then blackjack is the game for you, and you will be joining millions of people who have enjoyed this game over the decades. If you are looking for a more intense gambling experience, then welcome to the world of poker.
