Blackjack is one of the most popular casino table games in America and abroad. It is a beginner-friendly game that is quick to learn, but the complexities of gameplay mean that even professional gamblers remain hooked.
Many blackjack players wonder which is better: to play heads up against just the dealer or to seat themselves at a full table and play alongside other players.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both, which apply to online blackjack games as well as tables at brick-and-mortar casinos. Read on to discover the implications of playing against just the dealer versus at a full table so you can decide which option would be best for you.

Playing Blackjack Against The Dealer
Playing against just the dealer is called “heads up” play, and you will be able to enjoy a one-on-one interaction with the dealer. This is appealing to many blackjack pros, as well as novices who are sensitive to the other players. However, many players also feel like the dealer might be “overpowering” them, which is why they don’t prefer this style of play.
Advantages
There are several advantages for players who decide to play “heads up” at an empty table.
- Faster gameplay: As there are no other players at the table, the game will progress much faster. Speed is a bonus for many gamblers, and platforms like the fastest payout online casinos allow blackjack players who prioritize fast games to also instantly enjoy their winnings through fast withdrawals and lower transaction fees.
- Exploit the house edge: The faster a game progresses, the more hands you’re able to play. A professional or experienced player can use this pace to their advantage to exploit the house edge over the casino.
- Control the game: If there’s only the player and the dealer, the player has more control over the game and there is no concern that other players will make mistakes which can be costly. Other players may hit or split at the wrong time, taking cards out of the deck. These cards could’ve been what you needed in your hand to beat the dealer. By playing alone, this risk is ruled out.1)EDITOR NOTE: Of course, this type of thinking is nonsense. Other players may deplete cards from the deck or shoe, but their actions at the table have absolutely no affect on your expected advantage or disadvantage in the game. Don’t worry about how other players play. Their actions will just as often help you as hurt you.
- Take advantage of casino bonuses: This applies to online casinos where bonuses can be used to fund bankrolls. These bonuses are typically not available in live dealer games, making them ideal for solo players.
Disadvantages
Despite the pros discussed above, there are also downsides to playing blackjack heads up at an empty table.
- See fewer cards per round: If you have card counting skills, then it is a disadvantage to see fewer cards each round. Even if you don’t know how to count cards, seeing more cards will help you make playing decisions and judge what the chances are of you getting the card you need.2)EDITOR NOTE: This is not exactly how card counting works. You may see fewer cards per “round” when playing alone, but you will see many more “rounds” per hour. If you have an advantage in the game you will make more money per hour. If you are only playing a basic strategy you will lose more money per hour. My advice to players who are not card counting is to play at full tables and enjoy the game and social interaction. You will lose less in the long run!
- The dealer intimidation factor: Playing alone with the dealer can be intimidating. The dealer will often attempt to rush your play and not give you time to think.
- Lonely experience: Blackjack can sometimes be very social, and sitting alone at a table (whether real or virtual) can be a dull experience, especially when you have no one to celebrate your wins with.
Playing Blackjack At A Full Table
Many players prefer a full table because of the social setting and excitement, however, it also has disadvantages as the game slows down with each added player who takes a seat.
Advantages
Most of the advantages of playing at a full table are the exact opposite of the disadvantages of playing alone.
- The social aspect: Players who enjoy social gambling will have a more fun experience when playing at a full table. There is often this unspoken connection between players, and when the house gets crushed, everyone can celebrate together.
- Receiving advice: More experienced players are often willing to provide advice to newbies, which can teach them new skills and help them win. Although free advice is not always a good idea (some players may be out to get you), some good guys may be able to point out something you missed.
- See more cards: A full table is helpful for players who count cards as they’re able to see more cards and determine the likelihood of them getting the cards they need.3)EDITOR NOTE: Once again, this is not how card counters get an advantage. With the exception of a single deck game where you might get two rounds at a full table, card counters keep track of the cards as the cards are dealt. The deeper the deal into the shoe, the more information the card counter has.
Disadvantages
Unfortunately, there are also disadvantages to playing at a table where all the seats are taken.
- Slow game: Playing blackjack at a full table means that the game is going to progress much slower than if you were alone. When playing at a physical casino, players are often looking for a fast game so they can maximize their hands and their profits. A slower table means that the amount of money that can be won may be less.
- Not using play techniques to your advantage: Playing with more players means that tricks like hole carding can’t be applied. It’s also tougher to use the dealer’s mistakes to your advantage.
- Talkative and disruptive players: If you end up at a table with a group of friends all playing together, it can be very distracting if they’re constantly chatting and not following table etiquette. Players may also offer you bad advice, which can be costly.
Is A Full Or Empty Table Better For Playing Blackjack?
There is no right or wrong answer, and selecting a full or empty blackjack table is up to the player’s discretion. Both options come with advantages and disadvantages that must be considered.
The main consideration, though, is whether you want to play for fun or to make some serious money. If your main goal is making money, then it is a good idea to play heads-up against the dealer only. It will allow you to better control the game, and avoid getting bad advice, and the game will move along at a faster pace.
However, if you simply want to enjoy a social game as a form of entertainment, then a full table can be a very enjoyable experience. The gameplay may be slower, but the social aspect can be very exciting as you celebrate defeating the house with other players. If you’re able to play a round or two with people you know, it can be even more enjoyable.
