Progressive Jackpot Slots: Is Game Popularity Just Down to Jackpot Size?

Lots of MoneyBy John Ashurst.

Easily among the most popular form of online casino gaming, progressive jackpot slots have taken over the front pages of many platforms. Slots have long been wildly popular, and still are, but when you connect the ever-growing top prizes, even more people click to spin.

As the majority of the major progressive jackpots allow their prizes to trigger at random on any player, there’s a sense of just needing to be that lucky player to hit spin at the right time. Given the size of these jackpots, and how swiftly they grow, it’d be easy to assume that the top prize is the only appeal of these games.

As we’ve seen from a more recent trend in the progressive jackpots section, though, the developers have seen something that has them pivoting the strategy of game releases.

Eye-catching top prizes

The whole point of progressive jackpot prizes is to be appealing. Everyone’s used to big jackpots in slot games, with what are now termed ‘fixed jackpots’ being the standard. Some can be huge – up to six figures in some cases – and are usually there as a multiple of the bet. However, most know that triggering them is unlikely.

With progressive jackpots, you see in real-time when the jackpots drop. Plus, the prizes on the biggest games reach such huge sizes that headlines are made about them. Mega Moolah and WowPot! are the most notorious thanks, in part, to their high seeding of $1 million and $2 million, respectively, for the biggest of their jackpots.

However, the two jackpot suites under the Games Global banner aren’t the only progressive prizes out there anymore. The range of casino jackpot games is pretty vast now. It, naturally, included Mega Moolah and WowPot!, but there’s also prizes like Daily Jackpots and other progressive suites that are becoming a hit with players.

Keeping competitive with classics

After the early success of Mega Moolah, it didn’t take its developers long to add another game to expand the suite. This game came in the form of Mega Moolah Isis, named after the eloquent and beloved deity of ancient Egyptian mythology, which offered a different way to play than the original safari-themed slot. Still, more has been needed with greater competition.

Mega Moolah headlined the scene for years but now, with daily prizes, must-drop prizes, and other major progressive jackpots, the studio has had to diversify. New games have come, but the most successful have been the classics.

What was once Microgaming released so many of what would now be deemed classic slots. The best of them remain playable and popular to this day. So, tapping into that popularity, some classics have been brought into the Mega Moolah suite. Chief among these are Immortal Romance and the Thor-themed Thunderstruck II.

In a way, it shows the development of progressive slots; there is a clear need for a progressive-slots base game to be entertaining before the jackpots are triggered. For all of its charm, without its $1 million-plus prize, the original Mega Moolah may not be so popular in the modern space. Thunderstruck II has endured for its epic gameplay and features, so adding the progressive jackpot on top would in theory – and in practice, it seems – only make it more popular.

Progressive jackpots are wildly popular because of the well-advertised top prizes but, as developers have noticed, entwining slot experiences that have proven to be popular is now necessary in this modern, competitive space.
