The gambling industry has witnessed numerous controversies since its inception. It all began with participation in brick-and-mortar locations before expanding into options of being able to play live blackjack online all the time. Many are not in support of establishments like this because they feel that it causes unrest and financial ruin for people who are not capable of controlling their emotions. The emergence of technology to enhance betting capabilities also contributes to UK society, both negatively and positively.

While many gamble recreationally without any negative impact, there are some people who have developed gambling disorders. This stems from being unable to control their betting urges, thereby leading to bankruptcy, mental health and relationship issues, suicide, and even criminality. As a result, different bodies have been created to educate and treat enthusiasts whenever these behavioral addictions affect or pollute the goal of recreational betting. The aim is to lessen the harmful effects of staking among bettors.
Effects of Gambling on UK Society
In Great Britain, betting has always been a major recreational activity. Before the advent of casino games, horse racing was and remains a favorite theme for their betting endeavors. Indeed, the acknowledged legitimate age for punting is at least 18 years. However, the annual statistics from the National Gambling Treatment Service (Great Britain) 2020 record about 9008 individuals treated within betting services. Different organizations fund punting treatment services in the UK, like the National Health Services (NHS). These services provide viable psychotherapy, from counseling to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), to treat betting disorders.
Of course, the punting industry has been contributing to the economic welfare of the country. According to the Betting and Gaming Council, the UK’s betting and gaming industry has provided more than 110,000 jobs in the past year. Also, these job creations have generated over 4.2 billion Euros in taxes. However, with all these good sides, there are tons of cons to weigh, beginning with people’s perception of this activity. Since its seamless availability online, many enthusiasts have problems sticking to the proportional range of playing.
Consequences of Problem Gambling
Problem gambling is a common ailment that ails many players. This ailment causes harm to both the players and those around them. Therefore, Public Health England has identified various harms related to punting. They include:
- Relationship: It causes a lesser level of functionality and social support in the family. As a result, this can lead to domestic abuse in various forms. Thereby, increasing the divorce and separation rates of families.
- Mental and Physical Health: According to a systematic review and meta-analysis of gamblers, it has been discovered that about 75% of gamblers seeking treatment have one or more comorbidities, including 56% nicotine dependence, 30% depression, 18% alcohol abuse, and 15% dependence. Hence, they are likely to suffer from self-harming and depression issues relating to drugs, alcohol, and sleep. Thereby, leading to a significant risk of suicide.
- Criminal and Antisocial Behaviors: It is possible to feel shame and isolation, resulting from the societal attitudes to punting. Also, the possibilities of selling drugs and participating in theft and fraudulent activities seem high. This is because they feel the nudge to participate in these acts to fund their illicit behavioral activities.
People with gambling deficiencies possess a high probability of other mental health conditions like mood swings, anxiety, substance use and impulse control disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), to mention a few. As a result, the National UK Research Network for Behavioral Addictions (NUK-BA) was formed to enhance understanding, research, and treatments for behavioral addictions including punting disorders. This way, there can be a reduction in the risk rate. Also, these bodies act as educators on ways to prevent chronic addiction levels.
National Gambling Helpline
Until recently, the Gambling Commission accounts for less than 1% of problem adult punters. However, during the survey in 2023, the experimental estimates based on the updated survey questions and methodology increased this number to about 2.5%. Therefore, based on the Office for National Statistics, the latest estimates would mean that over 1 million people in Great Britain have gambling disorders. Since the amount of people actively seeking help for betting-related issues has increased significantly, different helplines are being created. One such is GamCare.

The National Problem Gambling Clinic in London was the first NHS clinic established for betting disorders in 2008. Ten years down the line, the NHS England long-term plan installed fifteen more clinics and included gambling disorder treatments. Also, GamCare offers information, advice, and support to those affected and harmed by betting. In 2023, it recorded about 52,370 calls and online chats. This is a 24% increase when compared to the previous year. There are also Gamblers Anonymous support groups adapted from the Alcoholics Anonymous mechanics.
Improve Quality of Life
With sufficient funding from the government and independent organizations, much can be achieved in controlling behavioral addiction for punters. This way, problem puntering (aka problem gambling) can be prevented in younger people, and those who suffer from it can recover without putting their families in harm’s way. This way, the quality of life of affected individuals can be improved. However, the strategic change begins with you adhering to responsible punting.
