Poker, the world’s most popular card game, transcends its status as a mere form of entertainment, and is in fact a global cultural icon. It has a unique history, widespread appeal, and represents a range of cultural values and narratives, like the individualistic entrepreneurship of the American frontier, for example. The game has persisted in pop culture in a number of ways over the years, perhaps because it’s a great metaphor for life itself – full of uncertainty, strategy, competition and the balancing of risk versus reward. Whether you’re a seasoned player or student of history, here are seven facts about poker anyone would find interesting.
1. Nobody knows for sure where poker comes from
The origins of poker are somewhat unclear. While there are dozens of theories on how it came about, none are provable beyond doubt. The most popular theory is that it originated in the 1800s in the United States, being an amalgamation of several card games played at the time. It seems likely that poker is a combination of the French game “poque” and a Persian game called “as nas.” Perhaps its uncertain origins are one of the reasons why nations and cultures worldwide have adopted the game.

2. Poker games are features in over 100 movies
Poker is arguably the most featured card game in cinematic history, making an appearance in over 100 popular movies. These include The Cincinnati Kid, Casino Royale, Maverick, Ocean’s Eleven, Molly’s Game, Rounders and many more. Poker actually surged in popularity worldwide in the 2000s, which many attribute to the game being featured in various forms of media around that time.
3. The World Series of Poker started in a Las Vegas casino
The first ever World Series of Poker, which has since become the most prestigious event in the poker world, was held in 1970 in Benny Binion’s Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas. This tournament was unique compared to subsequent WSOP events as it was invitation only as opposed to being an open tournament like it is today. The casino owner invited some of the best-known poker players in Las Vegas to compete, and the winner was determined by a vote instead of who was the last man standing.
4. The longest poker game ever was eight and a half years
The story of the longest running poker game ever, which took place in 1881 in Tombstone, Arizona, is a mix of historical curiosity and legend. While historians believe a very long game actually happened, it’s thought that the story is likely embellished, as with many tales of the Old West. The game supposedly lasted eight years, five months and three days.

5. Poker involves advanced mathematics
Poker isn’t just about the luck of the draw. Serious players use probability, statistics and game theory to make decisions, which can be incredibly complex. You can view poker as a mathematical tree, where each decision (call, bet, fold) reveals information about a player’s potential hand. By tracking actions and outcomes across the game’s stages, you can deduce the range of hands a player might have. This allows players to strategically calculate whether to fold, call or raise based on the odds of your hand beating their range.
6. Toby Maguire (Spider-Man) loves poker
Various celebrities, including Toby Maguire, Jennifer Tilly and Ben Affleck, love to play poker. Maguire has even earned himself respect amongst poker enthusiasts as he’s displayed his prowess in various high-stakes games. Affleck has also rubbed shoulders with some of the world’s best poker players, proving it’s more than just a hobby for him too.
7. One book taught countless professionals
Many professional poker players started their journey with a single guide, such as comprehensive guides published by platforms like PokerStars that help users learn how to play poker. One of the most famous sources is Doyle Brunson’s ‘Super System’, which countless legendary players supposedly learned from. The book covers various insights and strategies for both beginners and pros, but these can be learned more easily on online platforms nowadays.
Wrap up
Anyone who’s familiar with poker knows it’s much more than just a card game. Its prominence in media, culture and history tell us that it’s a kind of window into the human experience. This is reflected in popular sayings like “you play the hand you’re dealt”, “I’ve got an ace up my sleeve”, and “poker face”. These seven interesting facts give us a glimpse into how deeply it’s woven into the cultural fabric.
